Our Christmas Celebration

Christmas with big kids is a lot different than Christmas with young children. Usually they know what they are getting because if you don't ask them what they want, they won't want it. Heather (age 21) only wanted help with her bills and rent for January. Ryan (age 17) wanted dad to build him a gaming PC. Johnathan  (age 17) was the only one who didn't know what he was getting but he is very happy with the Kinect we bought him to go with his Xbox360, especially the voice-activated controller. Since we're a blended family, we didn't even have the "opening of the gifts" until around 1pm on Christmas. Johnathan spent the previous couple of days at his mom's house. Heather, home from college, has descended on the guest room and turned it into the normal hurricane-hit clothing store. She tried to spend some time with her biological father, but she ended up coming back over here early because they just don't get along. Ryan spent just two nights over there, then came back here, but decided to spend a couple hours over there on Christmas morning. We had a nice late afternoon Christmas ham dinner, all five of us together and no one even argued. I guess the most touching part of Christmas, for me, was the Christmas eve candlelight service at church. My daughter sat with my husband and me, but Ryan sat with his girlfriend's family. All in all, a nice, quiet, drama-free holiday. I told them Christmas will probably be a bit boring around here until they start getting married and bringing grandchildren over here. Heather has since told me I'm not allowed to talk about grandchildren yet because it gave her a nightmare.

Does Online Dating Really Work?

Online dating. The very phrase terrifies some people. On the other hand, I can tell you that online dating can be wildly successful. My husband and I met online through a dating website many years ago. I didn't have the resources to pay for babysitters as a single mom. However, I did have an internet connection and the courage to fill out the dating information forms. We've been married since June of 2001 and are still deliriously happy together.

Over the years, online dating has become more finely tuned and there are websites that are more targeted in the types of people they attract. ChristianCrush.com is a wonderful online database site made just for singles interested in Christian dating. They offer a free profile search, dating articles, and even marriage articles. One of the best parts of this website is that they use video profiles. There is also a personality assessment in every profile. They are one of the few Christian dating sites privately owned and operated by committed Christians. In fact, it was founded and developed by a licensed psychologist with a Doctorate degree. If you are looking for potential Christian dating partners, you should check out ChristianCrush.com today!

Answered Prayers

I've often heard that God answers prayers in one of three ways...Yes, No, or Wait. While wading through some old posts in a nostalgic sort of way, I found THIS POST from just one year ago and it really made me smile. Looking back over the past year, God not only answered my prayer, He has overwhelmed me with blog blessings beyond what I dreamed. There are thousands of you and I appreciate every single one of you. I pray that in the coming year, God blesses you too. Thank you for reading my blog!

One US winner will receive two weeks of the
Zone 1-2-3 Foods Standard Program,
a value of $74.50!
I've been sampling some of these delicious foods over the past few days. They taste so good, are loaded with protein, are low in fats and cholesterol, and best of all the foods keep you from feeling hungry between meals. That's always been the worst part of dieting but there is a science behind these foods that takes care of that. There are scrumptious cinnamon buns, breads, pretzels, cookies, pasta, flat breads and more!
The Zone 123 Program comes with a book that tells you everything you need to know to succeed on this weight loss program. Dr. Barry Sears is one of the world's leading authorities on the hormonal effects of diet. His book The Zone was a #1 New York Times best-seller and has been translated into over 20 languages.
No one likes a diet that feels like a diet. Starving yourself is not the answer. Choosing the right foods and making long-term little changes is the right way to lose weight. With the Zone 123 Program you can lose the weight while eating delicious foods! It's as easy as 123!

Seneca Farms Oatmeal - Review

Seneca Farms Oatmeal is a fabulous solution to healthy, delicious snacks and breakfast. Everyone knows oatmeal is an important part of a well-balanced food diet. I'm so happy that Seneca Farms has created their oatmeal. It's pre-made, pre-portioned, and needs no milk or water added. All I had to do was pull the top back and pop it in my microwave for 45 seconds. As I stirred it after warming, I could see and smell the delicious chunks of added fruit.
The first one I tried is the Cranberry Apple. I was afraid it might be bitter, but it was so good. Seneca Farms Oatmeal is an excellent source of Vitamin C, plus it has no trans fat or cholesterol, so it fits perfectly into my diet program. Since they are fully cooked they are a perfect take-along food for people on the go.
The Maple and Brown Sugar was absolutely amazing. It's definitely my favorite flavor so far, but I'm anxious now to try their Apple Cinnamon and Vanilla Peach flavors too. I've always loved oatmeal and I really love the taste and consistency of Seneca Farms Oatmeal.
TIME FOR A GIVEAWAY
Would you like to win two packs of Seneca Farms Oatmeal? Just fill out the Rafflecopter form below by December 31, 2011 at midnight and you'll be entered to win! Must be at least 18 years old, be a Planet Weidknecht follower, and have a US address. One winner takes all! Good luck!

I Just Discovered NoMoreRack

Do you love deals? Would you like to save 75 percent on clothes and purses? Up to and over 80 percent on electronics? How about 100 percent discount on jewelry? Um, YEAH!!! I just discovered nomorerack Daily Deals and I'm so excited that I just have to tell you about it. Every day, for just one day only, nomorerack offers eight absolutely unbelievable deals, plus a charity deal. Today's amazing deals included free earrings, a watch at 88 percent discount, and fashion hair clips at 73 percent discount. I can hardly wait until midnight to see tomorrow's deals!

One of the deals each day is called a charity deal. It's clearly marked which deal is the daily charity deal by a red box when you hover over it on the site. I think this is such an amazing perk of this website. For each charity item that sells, a portion goes to support one of several charities, such as Family Giving Tree and Bloggers for Joplin. Today's deal is a gorgeous pearl bracelet that normally retails for $59.99 for ONLY $15.00!

Then, there are the Insanity Deals. Yes, the ones that are truly insane deals and totally unpredictable. There are 1,000 Insanity Deals randomly posted throughout the month. Like a $1200 Sony Bravia 52" HDTV for, wait for it, under $60. That's no typo. Sixty bucks. How about an Apple iPad for under $44? Yes, really. You never know when they are going to pop up, so check in regularly! You'll know the Insanity Deals by the purple box. When they sell out, the deal disappears. Most only last a few minutes!

Nomorerack scam worrying you? Don't stress! This website is "buy/safe inspected and guaranteed" and as an added bonus, shipping is $2. Yep, two dollars. I don't know how they do it. I don't care why they do it. I'm just glad they do it. Most of the products come from cancelled orders and overstocks that nomorerack snaps up at bargain prices. They are Paypal Verified, McAfee Secured, and a Verified Authorize.net Merchant. Still not convinced? Check out all the fabulous nomorerack reviews and see what you've been missing!

Oransi Ionic Air Purifier - Review

I am so excited to tell you about the Oransi Ionic Fridge Air Purifier because this little guy does a big job! I hate when my refrigerator smells funny and this purifier makes the fridge smell so fresh. All I have to do is put two batteries in, press the button and put it in the fridge. How simple is that?!
The Ionic Air Purifier for the fridge is smaller than a soda can so it hardly takes up any room. It is completely silent with no fans and there are no filters to change. It's received safety certifications and uses a high negative ion output to freshen your refrigerator without the harmful side effects of ozone found in standard ionizers.
The indicator light on the front lets you know it's working. The first cycle is 30 minutes long, then only runs 5 minutes every two hours, for a total monthly operating cost of about a dollar. It kills bacteria, prevents mildew, and even reduces food spoilage. This is a fabulous gift idea!

Working with a Personal Trainer

It's been almost 48 hours since my last workout with my personal trainer and I can almost move without pain now. Since I was sick last weekend I didn't meet with him. He was here working out with Johnny, but I slept the stomach flu off that day. Saturday, Will showed up promptly at 10a.m. He's always on time! Johnny and I had already stretched out so we got started right away. Johnny's fighting seasonal allergies right now so his energy level is down. I was still tired from working all week, so I felt rather sapped of energy too.
Will worked us through a challenging hour of exercises, keeping us motivated and laughing. As tough as it is, we know it's good for us and we're both so happy with the results we are seeing. I actually had more energy after I cooled down from the workout than before I started! I can definitely tell there are positive differences in my body since I started working out. On Sunday, I was excited to wear a pair of jeans that I hadn't fit into for a while! If you've been thinking you need to get moving more, then give Will a call.  He will show you how to get fast results that are tailored specifically to you with just a short workout a couple days a week!

Should Children Have Homework?

One of the biggest complaints I hear from parents today is the fight that happens over homework. I don't even remember having homework until junior high, other than the occasional big project for a class. Nearly all of our learning was done at school in the classroom. Even young children seem to bring home a huge load of homework every night these days! Then it falls on the parents to make the child work all evening on schoolwork. After doing homework all day, the children really need to relax and play, in my opinion.

When children say they don't want to do their homework, it's not because they are lazy; I think it's because they need a break from working. Yes, there are appropriate times for children to have something to do outside of the classroom, but for the most part I think early academic education should take place in schools. And moral education should take place at home and in church. When children are home-schooled, parents tend to find this balance naturally very early on in the process. If the learning is quality learning, then it doesn't take twelve hours to get through the work. Most home-schoolers usually finish formal classwork in just a few hours.

I remember regular nightly homework starting around 7th grade. My parents helped me as they could, but once I reached 9th grade algebra I needed math help that they couldn't provide. Instead I went to teachers at my high school for assistance. I ended up spending some of my lunch time every day getting math help from an advanced level algebra teacher because he was the only one who could explain it to me in a way I could understand. Then I'd have to go home and do homework all evening too. School was hard for me as a teen and having loads of homework every night was depressing. I cannot imagine how that could benefit a 7 or 8 year old.

Trying to make young children keep on working after they spent eight hours in school is just not a good idea. Kids would be much healthier and happier if they got to come home from school, have a snack and go outside to play or spend time with their family. The Center for Public Education website says there is no conclusive evidence that homework increases student achievement across the board. Some studies show positive effects of homework under certain conditions and for certain students, some show no effects, and some suggest negative effects (Kohn 2006; Trautwein and Koller 2003). I think children should not have homework until at least 6th grade, except for an occasional research project, book report, or science project.

Nutrisystem Update - Five Weeks #NSNation

I am focused. I am determined. I am succeeding!
This week, I've lost FOUR MORE POUNDS,
for a total of 13 pounds lost in five weeks!!!!
Thank you Nutrisystem!

Now, granted I had stomach flu over the weekend, so two pounds was illness weight, but I gained it back, then lost it permanently so I know it's real weight loss. This morning I had a delicious garden vegetable omelet, a banana, and a chunk of fat-free cheese. Now if this coffee would just wake me up...

I also have some great news about Nutrisystem! I got an email yesterday that Janet Jackson is the new celebrity endorser of Nutrisystem. She got on the program too and even though she rarely does endorsements, she is partnering with Nutrisystem because she is finding success on the program too! She is helping to launch the new Success program, the most comprehensive weight loss program in the forty year history of the company!
Last night, I sampled one of the new Chef's Table dinners on the Success program. The Moroccan Inspired Chicken with rice and spinach is sooooo yummy. They are now using a new patented steamer bag technology that works in the microwave, so I was anxious to see how it worked. All I had to do was put it in the microwave for five minutes and my amazing dinner was ready! For dessert, I had a Nutrisystem almond coconut chocolate bar. It's hard to believe this is "diet food" because it's all so delicious! A council of professional chefs works together to create their fabulous menu of foods.

Janet Jackson and Nutrisystem are also starting a new charity called NutriBank that will help feed the hungry around the world. For every pound lost on Nutrisystem during 2012, the company will match it with one dollar's worth of nutritious food delivered through NutriBank. How awesome is that? I get to lose the weight and a hungry child gets to gain it. What a wonderful trade-off!

Sponsor #5 - Learning Resources Alphabet Suitcase
Opening a new toy is always a joy for a child. When it's a suitcase, there is no telling what treasure lies within. This four year old girl was so excited to help me discover the Alphabet Suitcase. Learning Resources has created a wonderful new addition to their line of learning toys.
Inside the suitcase we discovered an entire literacy center filled with high-gloss die-cuts, letters and activity cards. There are so many ways to use these materials and it can be adapted for varying ages and stages. The activity cards are write and wipe, with dotted letters for tracing upper case letters.
The letter cards are blue and red, to differentiate the vowels from the consonants. The picture cards have the initial letter printed on the reverse side to help children associate the letter with the picture, as well as provide practice in letter sounds. They are great for providing early vocabulary as well.
She started out with the activity cards, searching and locating the matching letter and matching picture card. There are so many different ways to use these materials but I wanted to see what she would do with them first. This educational toy would be perfect for on-the-go specialists too!
I love the divider in the bottom of the sturdy 7.25" x 11" inch suitcase. The plastic handle and metal suitcase closure tabs ensure everything stays inside like it should during travel. The metal hinges will hold up to years of opening and closing. She even decided to use the lid as she explored the activity cards.
She discovered some different activity cards at the bottom of her stack. One was A B _ D E to help with letter order and another was _ a t with a picture of a hat to help with sounding out letters. As a preschool teacher, I think this is a fabulous learning center in a box. It's portable, it's child-sized, it's made of quality materials, and can be adapted to any preschool child's level of learning.
Can you think of anyone who would love the Alphabet Suitcase? I'm so happy to announce that Learning Resources is sponsoring Planet Weidknecht for the Christmas Haul Giveaway, starting 12/16/11, so you can enter to win your own Alphabet Suitcase!

Be sure to follow Learning Resources on Facebook and Twitter, so you can be informed of new releases and special promotions. Their website currently has a free shipping offer too!

Shutterfly Photo Books

The Christmas Haul Giveaway is a prize package of wonderful products from several different sponsors.
One lucky Planet Weidknecht reader will win everything in the Christmas Haul Giveaway!

Sponsor #4 - Shutterfly Photo Books
This was my first-ever product from Shutterfly and I am so happy with it. The online Storytelling with Photo Books feature helped me to design and create a beautiful photo book of my vacation with my husband to Nevada this past summer. The Storytelling destination includes tips on how to capture your stories and memories through photo books by Shutterfly Chief Storyteller Heather Maddan. Each month features different content and December is focused on family storytelling, including tips on capturing unique holiday photos and how to tell your family’s story through pictures.
I loved the options in the ordering process. The website allows users to either custom design every single page or use a template. I used a template as the basic design of my book then added my photos where I wanted them, moved some around, re-sized some of them and added a few embellishments. Very easy to use!
The shipping was quick and my book arrived in a cardboard book shipper that protected it from pretty much anything the post office could dish out. It was also sealed in plastic to protect from water. Attention to details like that make me believe a company cares about its customers. The book is beautiful and I'm so pleased with it. These would be awesome Christmas gifts!
I'm so excited that Shutterfly is a sponsor in the Christmas Haul Giveaway (starting 12/16/11) and one lucky reader will win a Free Photo Book gift code, to create their own photo book!
Disclosure: I received this product at no charge in exchange for my honest review.

Reading is Fundamental and Charity Giftgiving

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) has a long heritage of providing literacy opportunities to children, particularly those in under-served communities. Did you know that 75% of children living in poverty don’t have a single book in their household? A child without access to books is on his or her way to becoming one of the 33% of 4th graders who cannot read at the basic level. Reading and literacy are the keys to success in today’s education system, and RIF is striving to ensure that ALL kids have the opportunity to achieve greatness.

In March, Congress eliminated RIF’s $25 million funding allocation from the federal the budget and RIF must now rely on the generosity of private donors to continue their efforts to support the students who eagerly await book distributions and the volunteers who run RIF centers in communities across the country. Donations can be made to RIF via their website, phone or email. Details are available at http://www.rif.org/us/donate/ways-to-give.htm.

* RIF is a great way to give a gift to someone who has everything - Give in their name!
* RIF is a great way to give a gift to someone in heaven - Give in memorium!
* RIF is a great way to give a gift that helps everyone's future!

Your donation could change the life of a child! They appreciate ANY size donation!

It is a beautiful hardbound book with paper sleeve, perfect for gift-giving. Throughout the book you will find mantras and information to help you do the chants. Dr. Sha is trained as both a conventional medicine doctor and a conventional Chinese medicine doctor. I found it a very interesting read!
This book also comes with a bonus Tao Song and Tao Dance dvd. It includes video recordings of the mantras that are the subject of the book. It also includes a video of a teacher doing the Tao Dance. Eleven tracks are on this lovely dvd to help transform your life. This is not a religious book, but a spiritual book that is inclusive of all religions. The dvd is very relaxing to me.

One hardbound copy of Tao Song and Tao Dance, along with dvd, will be included in the Christmas Haul Giveaway prize package!

The Christmas Haul Giveaway starts 12-16-11.
